Description evnln 2009-03-30 03:13:27 UTC
When a wide chart covering lots of data is created a Secondary Axis is often
needed to show the Major axis on the right to reference the data close to that
position. Unfortunatly when you save the defined axis, and close the
spreadsheet, the secondary axis information is not saved. They had to be added
and configured again to be able to see the axis on the right. This occurs with
line graph charts of various types. I don't know if it occurs for all charts.
This is a major annoyance because it has to be done daily so that the chart can
be screen printed and posted elsewhere.
Recreation:
1.Create a Line graph chart with a long column of data (I'm at over 150 rows
currently).
2.Select the Chart and Define the Major Axis, and make sure this chart spans
more than one window width, so that the Major Axis can't be seen when viewing
data on right.
3.Select the chart, Select Insert -> Axes, and under Secondary Axes, check Y
axis. The Y axis appears with data that does not coordinate with the Major Axis.
4. Save the Spreadsheet, and close it.
5. Reopen the Spreadsheet and observe that the Major Axis remains, but the
Secondary Y Axis you defined has now disappeared.

I cannot reproduce the problem with OOo 3.0. Are you sure that you don't use an
older version?
Comment 2 evnln 2009-04-03 03:30:23 UTC
I am using version 3.0.0, OOO300m9 (Build: 9358).
Are you sure you are using that version to try to recreate it?
The secondary Y axis is not saved on saving spread sheet and has to be entered
each time the document is opened.
Should i try to upload the rather large spread sheet to show it happening? I'll
try to strip it down to just the two sheets involved in the graphs.
Comment 3 evnln 2009-04-03 03:35:49 UTC
This occurs on the stripped version that only has the two sheets involved in
Graphs as well, so it's not a matter of number of sheets.
I've attached the spreadsheet in question.
Comment 4 evnln 2009-04-03 03:41:57 UTC
Ah, I tried to do an attachment and it won't let me attach an xls document, so I
saved it as ods, and lo and behold the problem went away.
SO, it is a problem with saving the document in xls format.

This document needs to be in XLS because it is used by others who don't have
open office.
Comment 5 IngridvdM 2009-04-03 10:07:51 UTC
Ah, that was the important missing information.
I can confirm that the secondary axis is lost when saving to xls with OOo 3.0.
It is not lost when saving to ods.
@dr, this seems to be a problem in the filter, please have a look.
Comment 6 daniel.rentz 2009-04-03 10:26:44 UTC
Excel does not allow to add a secondary Y axis without attached series.
Comment 7 evnln 2009-04-03 22:27:53 UTC
Is it possible to attach it to the series like Excel so it is saved?
Comment 8 evnln 2009-04-03 22:32:19 UTC
Is it possible that when bug #80518 is fixed, and the secondary axis is attached
to the first, that it will save when saved as xls?
If so, this ought to be part of the fix for bug #80518
Comment 9 daniel.rentz 2009-04-05 11:10:40 UTC
The user has to attach at least one series to the secondary Y axis, before
saving to XLS. There is no way to do so automatically in the XLS export filter.
This is unrelated to issue 80518.
