Calc hangs (cpu load 100%) when I try to draw a chart for 25000 rows (2 columns)
of data.

Try to draw a chart for enclosed test spreadseet ($A$1 - $B$25000 with
default settings) and Calc will hang (or at least it goes for 100% cpu
usage for 4 minutes). Data set in the enclosed sthe sheet has been
created with Edit->Fill->Serie tool, so  it's just the amount of data
that reveals the beast not the data itself.
