Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 21588
export chart as postscript, image (PNG, BMP...) or pdf
Last modified: 2024-02-14 04:40:20 UTC
It would be great if there was a feature to export _Just_ a chart from Calc/writer/etc to a PostScript or EPS file, to be able to include that file in other applications like Tex.
Hi Bettina, maybe this is a double to Issue 18809. Please have a look. Frank
Reassigned to Ingrid.
Changed prio and target and added pdf and image export to the summary. As a partial workaround you can paste the chart as bitmap from the clipboard using Edit->'Paste Special'. Another trick is to paste the chart to a draw document and use the export functionality there.

This feature is important for many students, professors and researchers. See for example the submission policies for the magazines Science and Nature: http://www.sciencemag.org/about/authors/prep/prep_revfigs.dtl http://mts-nature.nature.com/cgi-bin/main.plex?form_type=display_auth_instructions
And I think that the use of svg format could be very good.
Will this issue deal with the copy/paste incompatibility between Calc chart and other famous open sources applications? Actually it is not possible to copy/paste a chart into the body of a new message (in Thunderbird) or into a new image (in Gimp).
I'm really surprised this request is still pending, despite being present in triple copy. I think this feature is rather important, yes, and having it any time soon would be good. (I wrote and deleted some sarcastic comments about being a 7 years old request...)
Well, this issue has reached a landmark... that means it's time to implement! 70 votes!!! woohoo!!
The best workaround I found so far is this: http://phanvinhthinh.blogspot.com/2010/09/workaround-for-openofficeorg-draw.html It basically advises to change the page size before exporting as pdf.
That workaround suggests copy+paste-ing the graph into a new Drawing. Instead, you could simply move the graph in such a way it is the only object in a page when the spreadsheet is printed and export the spreadsheet as a PDF. Once you have the PDF, it is just a matter of copying the image using the image copying tool of your favorite PDF reader. Alternately, if you paste it into a new Drawing, then you can 'Export' it as an image file directly. Having said that, these options are simply 'workarounds'. It would be nice to have a more direct solution.
Any chance to fix this before this bug's tenth anniversary?
This really very important to researchers and students!! we all need to export images from calc.
With 86 votes, this feature should be implemented as soon as possible now! Is there any technical issue that hinders the implementation? As a reminder, this feature is badly needed for all of us who are bound to use LaTeX to typeset research papers, for instance...
Is the export functionality supposed to work a) when the chart is activated? b) only when the chart is selected in Writer/Calc/Draw/Impress? Option b) seems to be more user-friendly: there is no need to activate the chart in order to export the graphic. It could be implemented in the context menu that pops up when the chart is selected.

In the meantime, while this gets fixed, you can try the extension at http://people.apache.org/~arielch/extensions/contextmenuinterceptor/ It adds a mew item "Save Graphics..." right after "Edit", when you right-click on a chart.
Unfortunately, this extension doesn't install for me in AOO-4.0 (I don't try for previous versions) with error: "loading component library failed: file:///C:/ Documents%20and ... /ContextMenuInterceptor-0.0.1-windows-x86.oxt/Windows/ContextMenuInterceptor.uno.dll" Does it planing to implement this feature at least in OpenOffice 4.1?
(In reply to Ariel Constenla-Haile from comment #18) > It adds a mew item "Save Graphics..." right after "Edit", when you > right-click on a chart. It seems that in AOO-4.1.2 export as graphics looks broken as exported image contain "ugly" rendered curve without smoothing. I currently don't test with AOO-4.1.1 again and don't remember that it was also wrong rendering early. Is it possible to repair this very useful extension? It's also will be better finally to implement this feature as this feature request is already 12 years old.
In bug 112829 I did just commit a patch that allows graphics, including charts, to be copied out of Calc in SVG format. Is that enough for this issue, or are you looking for something else?
