Per Edward Tufte:
  Dont put in legends, permit direct labeling of the chart lines...  I have a
series of data, which I would like to label the line, however I can not figure
out how to get text boxes in my chart, much less rotate them and position them
properly to provide extra information.
  Excel charts have always screwed this up, and to your defense, you have
mimiced the screw up perfectly; unfortunately, I want better.  Labeling the
actual lines as opposed to the legend makes it much easier for the viewer to
look at the graph substance instead of the legends and technology artifacts...

Allowing to display the series name near the plotted line sounds like a goog
idea. Where this new position excactly is and how  this option should be offered
to the user has still to be considered.
