Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 32747
Adjusting the spaces between columns in chart manually
Last modified: 2013-02-24 21:21:05 UTC
When the column in the chart is selected, it should be possible to drag it to one or another side in order to change the space between columns or the width of the column. As sometimes it is needed to make bigger spaces between columns' groups (ex. In the attached document there is a chart representing the wood gain of 3 different woods (oak, brich, pine) in 3 different districts (Kaunas, Alytus, Vievis) years 2003-2004) therefore to make the chart more demonstrative I need to separate each districts wood gain of 2003-2004 using spaces between some columns in chart. Now it is impossible to do that, AFAIK, because curently it is possible to change the spaces between all the columns (look at "Data Series" dialog, "Options" tab) thereas I need to do it between each two ones. The ability to change the space between columns by draging with the mouse has to be added. I guess it is a usability bug that it is impossible to do that. I'm also attaching a picture (made with Inscape SVG editor :) of the chart as I want it to look like.

TK->BH: I think it's an good idea to build separate groups.
Reassigned to Ingrid.
I consider this feature to be too complex in use and much to special to be worth the effort of implementing and testing. We already have two values for positioning the bars in relation to each other. There are better possibilities to build visible sub groups of bars within a category. For example you can choose similar colors within the groups (e.g. bright green and dark green for Kaunas, bright brown and dark brown for Alytus etc. ). or you can put different hatchings on the different subgroups as an other example.
