Description vandan 2004-10-07 07:15:02 UTC
In Excel ( sorry for starting out with those 2 words ... ), I've set up a chart
that has text labels down the Y axis. Then I set the font to 8-point. Excel will
'push' the main chart area to the right to accomodate for the increased size of
the category labels down the Y axis.

When I open the .xls in OpenOffice 1.9.54 ( which wasn't available in the issue
tracker by the way ), instead of increasing the width of the Y-axis area to
accomodate for the labels ( and pushing the main chart area to the right ),
OpenOffice instead wraps the label text, making the label take up multiple
'rows'. It looks very bad.

I can provide an example if needed, however I've left it out for now because the
.xls I'm talking about has sensitive data, so I'll have to make another with
'test' data ( no problem if that's what's needed ).

My appology.

I missed a feature of the charting module: you can set a 'text-flow' property
for labels. If I de-select 'break', the labels are displayed properly.

Perhaps this should be the default setting, at least when importing from an
Excel chart? It would make imported charts look more like the original without
any editing.

Yes, the current default is not very good and should be improved.

Can we change this from 'Enhancement' - at the moment it makes imported charts
from Excel unusable in many cases.

I suspect a simple initial improvement would to default to 'break' being off for
the X-axis labels since in general the Y-axis has space and also breaks a bit
more neatly than the X axis.

Yes agreed, from the view point of import it is a defect.
For the moment please use the workaround and disable the property 'Break' for
the axis labels. You can find this setting at the axis Object Properties dialog
on the tab page 'Label'. You than will need to make sure that all your axis
labels are short enough to leave enough space for the display of the data itself.
By the way it is always helpful if you could provide an example or screenshot
how it should look like and how it looks after import maybe as png. Thanks a lot.

Fixed in CWS chart2mst3.

Labels on vertical axes and value labels on any axis now are never wrapped over
multiple lines. Only horizontal text labels on horizontal axes are wrapped when
the property 'break' is set.
When the not wrapped labels do not fit into the rectangle that is given by the
user or by the automatic calculation then the labels just lap outside. But you
can still see and select the selection handles as they are placed on the user
defined rectangle - not on the resulting rectangle.

If someone likes he could test the current behaviour in the preview version
