Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 48170
free positioning of data labels
Last modified: 2014-05-07 14:31:28 UTC
If the automatism for data label positioning does not generate the desired result, it must be possible to adjust the position of each label manually. For example this possibility was requested amoung others in Issue 13652. Also Issue 4039 would be less painful having this feature.

Any chance of this being corrected in OOo 2.3?
This is an important feature for many simple users I met during trainings. The issue is that they are not fluent enought with IZ to report it.
Version 2.3 is supposed to have a totally new chart module. We tested the latest release of version 2.3, and this problem is still there. Wouldn't it have been good to address this problem in the new chart module? When can we expect a different target milestone than "OOo Later"? Are my users the only ones for whom this is a big problem?
This is an essential feature for me. In earlier versions of OOo it has been possible to freely move data labels around (I don't remember which versions, however) - unfortunately it has been removed at some point.
Don't know about free positioning, but the automatic optimal positioning of labels seems to have been integrated in Version 2.4, which we rolled out last week. We originally posted this issue. As far as we're concerned it is solved, even though the Target milestone still says "OOo Later".

If you open the attachment called "Analyse Retouren fertig.ods" in Version 2.4 (it was created in Version 2.0.4), you will see overlapping labels as before. However, if you double click on the graphic, the labels are automatically repositioned in an optimal way without you having to do anything else. Then you just save the file, and the labels stay optimally repositioned. If you create the document from scratch in Version 2.4, the labels are optimally placed by default. That's good enough for us. Your example has 2 rows of data (whose labels overlap), whereas ours only has one.
Ahh, I see. But doesn't that justify the need to have movable data labels? So that we can avoid situations with more than one data series?
Yes, free positioning of labels would certainly be good. I'm just saying the original reason that we voted for this problem is no longer acute.

When you open excel_chart.xls in OO Calc, position and chaged text of data-labels is loost.
Important to me as other office packages can do this easily. Data labels in pie charts can overlap even when "best fit" or "outside" are selected as desired position.
I'm on LibreOffice 4.1.5.3 and I have the same issue Davethegeo. Data labels in pie charts can overlap even when "best fit" or "outside" are selected as desired position.
