Along with variable error bars, for Calc to produce meaningful graphs that
students can use in actual physics (or somesuch) experiments x error bars are
also needed.

This is a defect that needs to be addressed ASAP as it prevents adoption of OO
in academic institutions.  If the Chart functionality can be improved it would
go a long way to seeing OO being taken more seriously.  As it is I cannot use it
to plot my data as I need both x and y error bars.

Confirmed with OOo 2.0.1, using PC with XP SP2.

Was rather surprised that I could confirm this issue! As a scientific User, I
would say this was an essential enhancement. However, this is a duplicate of 
Issue 42946. It may interest 'Dave' to also look at Issue 366.

As a science student I can't live whithout X error bars.
