Unless I add gridlines to an axis while the wizard is active, it appears to be impossible to add or remove them later. 

Format Axis doesn't have a choice to add grid lines.  It's in the code the wizard uses, but inaccessible to the user.

Try to use the Button Horizontal / Vertical Grid on/off in the Main
Toolbar.
