Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 72914
new chart: description for rotation order for 3D charts differs from implementation
Last modified: 2013-02-24 21:20:11 UTC
Generate a 3D column chart with one data value, which gives you one box. Open the 3D View Dialog and set x rotation 0 degree y rotation 10 degree z rotation 45 degree. The spec says "The rotations are applied in this order: First X rotation, then Y rotation and then Z rotation." (page 6 line 46) But what you see is, that the Z rotation is done first. If you would do it in the order X-Y-Z you would see the top side of the box too. Take a carton in your hand and rotate it with your hands to see the difference. I guess, that you use the same way as for custom shapes in 3D view. For custom shapes first the shape rotation (which corresponds to the Z rotation of the chart) is applied and then up-down and left-right of the 3D view are applied.
regina, how do I open the 3D View Dialog? Also, could you, please, attach sample document to your issue, so that we are on the same track. Thanks a lot.
This is an issue for the build http://ooo.services.openoffice.org/pub/OpenOffice.org/cws/upload/chart2/mst10/ You get the 3D View Dialog in the edit mode of the chart via context menu. The mentioned spec is http://specs.openoffice.org/chart/Chart3DViewDialog.odt

@ regina: sorry, but when i set a value x, y or z for the Rotation, the live Preview rotated the chart simultaneously. So the Z rotation is done when i change the value. @IHA: what is the correct meaning of "The rotations are applied in this order: First X rotation, then Y rotation and then Z rotation." (Spec page 6 line 46)
@ kla: Of course in the preview the rotations are "simultaneously", but the question is, how the transformation matrix is calculated.
I looked again, why the chart doesn't look like I expected it. I found, that you rotate around axes which are lined up to the page. I expected that the axis for rotation are orientated as the axes of the chart. So it seems to be OK [as designed :) ] and the issue might be closed as invalid. It remains, that it needs to be mentioned somewhere in the help, because Excel rotates it different and users who change from Excel might be confused.
Regina, ok thanks - so I close his issue as works for me. But you are right - this rotation thing is tricky and confusing. Maybe we should really change the interpretation of the displayed angles to MS like style -> issue 72995.
