Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 75735
Polar plots
Last modified: 2017-05-20 10:03:18 UTC
A Polar plotting function would be a very useful extra graph to have. Excel 2000 doesn't have this, (Gnumeric does), but is very useful in some fields of Science and Engineering. In fact we previously had to BUY a program to allow us this extra functionality in Excel. We would much rather we may to do this natively in OOo.
Created attachment 43926 [details] Example of Polar Plots in Gnumeric 1.70, please note newer versions dont work with this
Please note, the attached polar plot is to act as an example. But because of the new graphing system used in Gnumeric, that currently any versions newer than 1.70 will not read this file. 1.70 will read it ok.
@Iha: pls have a look.
Could you please attach the example as png. Thanks a lot.

Thanks :-) I would like to consider a general approach where the polar plot is not restricted to angle values from 0 to 360 degress but instead allows a flexible range of values (like for the x axis in a scatter plot). The idea is to have the same data structure as for xy charts. But then the 'angle'-axis label would not necessarily show angles. How does the data look like in your scenario? And Is it important to you to have real angle values displayed on the 'angle'-axis?
I think the angle axis really does have to show the angle. I've checked with my colleagues and they dont believe that a polar plot should show anything but 360 degrees in angle. There may be occasions for other users where this is important, but not for our usage. I'm not totally sure what you mean about how does your data look like in this scenario, if you could clarify i'll see if I can help.
I could imagine different input data for the angle: a) values from 0 to 360 b) values from 0 to 2Pi c) or for example values from 20 000 to 45 000 where you want to map 20000 to angle 0 and 45000 to angle 360.
Yes, your ideas may sense. Perhaps 0 to 360 could be a default, with other values such as yours as options? Either way, polar plots would be a very useful addition to OOo. Certainly in MS Office 2000, ( i dont know about newer versions), there is no capability to be able to use Polar Plots.
What functionality is missing in existing net charts?
