Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 76160
Can't select line with mouse after trendline is created
Last modified: 2013-02-24 21:22:30 UTC
After a trendline is created over the data which is then obscuring the original line in a line graph it becomes impossible to change the properties of the line data. One cannot shut off the trendline either because the creation and selection of the trendline are part of the line data information. In short, if a trendline covers a data line and the user either wants to change the data line properties or shut off the trendline, it becomes very difficult - I couldn't figure it out. Is there something I'm missing?
click any object in the chart. Use tab-key to go from one object to the next. Watch the status bar to see which object is selected. When you reach 'Data Series selected', that's your data curve; 'Line selected' is your regression curve.
please change this to as an important feature request then because I'd wager that most people would not expect this behavior as it isn't intuitive in the least. Most people want to click on the object and not use the tab key to scroll through 20 objects (most of my plots have at LEAST 5 lines on them with 5 regression curves) just to get to the one that they want. how about using a key combination with the mouse like a ctrl-left-click to go through the z-axis to get to the items you want or right-clicking to go through z-axis items. The tab method is sorely lacking. Just because there is "a" solution doesn't mean it is a good one or one that will even be used. I know that chart is actively being worked on for the 2.3 release and this feature would be greatly appreciated.
Ok, I just tried it out and it does NOT work properly. Sure, I can tab through and get the line highlighted but then right-clicking and trying to get the object properties pulls up the regression line formatting issues. In other words, the interface/interaction is NOT consistent. If there is no regression line then right-clicking on the highlighted data line pulls up the data object properties. If there is a regression line then right-clicking on the highlighted data line pulls up the regression object properties which forces the user to highlight the data line using the tab key and then going up to the menu bars to be able to change the data object properties. In short, there are 2 ways to alter data object properties - going to the menu bar or right-clicking (if no regression line) but when a regression line is present then the user can ONLY go to the menu bar to change the underlying data object properties and they MUST use the tab key to get there. Honestly, this SUCKS as a user interface and if this is going to be left as-is then don't shoot the messenger when people complain about inconsistent user interfaces. I've presented the information - do with it what you will but changing it to anything other than an Open-Defect is shorting the users.
There are indeed usability problems with using the mouse. I adjust the summery accordingly. Perhaps it can be handled together with issue 44768. @enmane: You can select the properties of a data series from its symbol in the legend. Use a single click into the selected legend, directly onto the data series symbol. I don't know, whether it is worth to hold this issue, because the new chart module is coming soon. The new chart works different. There you can get both, Data Series line and regression line, from there symbols in the legend. Clicking on the line in the diagram selects the regression line. If the regression line is selected, press Shift-F3 to leave the statistic group and select the data series line. If the data series line is selected, press F3 to enter the statistic group and select the regression line. @enmane: Please try the new Chart module, and report usability problems for that module in a new issue. http://graphics.openoffice.org/chart/chart.html
Regina, it behaves similarly in the new Chart package also. Actually, that's the package that I've been testing - I figured I'd help if I could. I haven't tried it through the legends but don't believe that is the way it should be intended to work. A user should be able to right-click on the highlighted line and get the relevant properties menu. Anyhow, could you bump this over to the Chart fellows as I can't seem to figure out how - sorry, about that.
I agree! As a physics student, I'm requred to display trendlines, Error bars, and the formula (function) for said line. Surely it's not that hard to add the ability to show the function of the line!
@IHA: pls have a look.
Yes thanks Regina, this one is duplicate to issue 44768. *** This issue has been marked as a duplicate of 44768 ***
