When I'm trying to format properties (eg X-axis scale), I want a way to apply
changes immediately to the chart, without dismissing the dialog box. Otherwise,
I have to keep on right-clicking in exactly the right place to get the dialog
back, until I'm happy.

So we either need an "Apply" button, or changes should take effect as soon as
they are made in the dialog box.

I agree. This is a usability problem.
