Description adic 2004-04-29 08:13:25 UTC
Hi,

I would like to ask for an imprivement in the way charts are drawn, and more
specifically the axis numbering system.
This are 3 descriptions of what I would like to have in OO:

1. Allow more than 3 conditional formats in custom number formats
2. Be able to specify a user defined list as a number format, where 0=first
entry, 1 = second and so on
3. Some kind of vlookup type table to return appropriate text strings.

I want that for example on the Y axis to have instead of (0,1,2,3,4) any text
for each value like (AA, AB, AC, AD, AE) and to be able to assign for each axis
value a text string which will appear on that axis instead of the value.

Thanks,
Adrian

->adic: Could you please give an example how you want to use this three
different features? Especially I would like to know wether you are looking for
categories at two axis at the same time or categories only at the y axis? In the
latter case a mirrored line chart with swapped x and y axis would be what you
are looking for with the second request. Is that right?

iha: An example of use:

- draw a chart where on the X axis I have the dates when the students of a
classroom took exams, and on the Y axis I have their grades in this scale:
Insufficient, Sufficient, Good, Very Good. I would like that Insufficient to be
represented like it would be equal to 0 ... Very Good as 3, so that on the Y
axis to only have the text grades, and not 0,1,2,3.

- for the X axis I could want to have some text too instead of the actual
values, like EXAM_1 instead of 22.08.2004 and so on.

Thank you for the fast response :-). So I guess each student would be a line in
your example and you can see his improvements over time. Thats a nice example.

to 2) Having a list of n texts for the values 0 to n on an axis is already an
exsisting concept called categories. It is not very flexible at the moment. You
need to have those texts listet in the first row or column of your data range.
This will be improved within Issue 3997. Maybe you want to have a look at the
specification at
http://specs.openoffice.org/chart/dataselection/FlexibleSourceRangeSelection.sxw.
This concept might not be excaclty what you need but I fear that there would be
to much confusion if we indroduce another similar system here. So I tend to not
offer this but instead concentrate on your request 3). Because you can get 2)
when having 3):

to 3) I assume that having a vlookup like method to replace values could be a
powerful method to create customized axis labels. We should consider this.
Details have to be specified. As I would like to concentrate on this idea within
this Issue I changed the summary accordingly.

to 1) 'er' is the one working on the number formatter. He tends to not touch the
limit to three conditions in numberformats. Maybe you would like to try to
convince him yourself. In that case please do submit a separat Issue to him.
Thank you for you input.
